The Lower Engadin is the home of the only national park in Switzerland. The Lower Engadin with its main centre Scuol with its Engadin Bad Scuol spa is known for its beautifully decorated houses in the typical Engadiner style. Many so-called 'Sgrafittis', often including the family crests or scenes from the bible, embellish the thick house walls with their deeply recessed windows, which formerly protected the dwellers from the freezing winters. Particularly worth seeing also are, besides Scuol, the villages Ardez, Ftan, Sent and Guarda, situated on a natural sun terrace above the Inn. Duty-free status is enjoyed at the eastern tip of the canton by the holiday destination of Samnaun.
